Winter Safety Courses At Boji Powersports

Snowfall creates different emotions for people, but for those who love to play in it, there is an extra level of excitement and adventure. In Northwest Iowa, there are limited hills for snowmobiling but many riders enjoy riding the trails or riverbeds. Others pack up their mountain sleds and head out west.

These experiences create wonderful memories but it’s always important to be prepared and safe.

“It’s key that you are always prepared for the unexpected,” Boji Powersports Store Manager Jordan Butler shared. “Whether you are out on the groomed trails or on the ice, remember that it’s important to be aware and if you’re on the ice that no ice is safe ice.”

Boji Powersports offers a number of winter safety courses throughout the winter. One that takes place every December is an Avalanche class led by Mike Duffy, a well-known safety instructor and on a search and rescue team in Colorado.

“Mike provides so much value. While we don’t have mountains here, a lot of our customers head out west to ride in the Hills or further west in the mountains. It’s important to have proper training for those unexpected situations,” Jordan said.

Mike teaches on being prepared for the unexpected and how to properly use tools in an avalanche kit or how to react if you end up in an avalanche while out riding in the mountains. The interactive course allows guests to try out different tools.

In January, Boji Powersports will host a course through the Highway Patrol and DNR that focuses on UTV road safety. This goes over proper signage to street legal kits. “We want to be good partners with our local law enforcement and contribute to the community in a positive way from the educational perspective,” Jordan added. “The course is really good on learning what’s safe and how to properly operate an UTV out on the roads.”

Jordan said he really enjoys being able to help people find the right vehicle, whether it’s for enjoyment or for work. “These machines are so multi-faceted, whether it’s a toy for going around the lake or for working at the farm,” he shared. “We love to help people build dreams.”

Over Winter Games, Jordan recommends several tidbits like never going under a bridge and always being aware, especially how the ice is continuously changing. “Seams are always changing and recognizing that the ice depth is going to vary creating extreme caution when out on the ice. Most importantly, the Dickinson County Snowhawks do a tremendous job making sure trails in the area are ready for winter riding.”

Valuable tidbits for Riding:

Ride Preparation: Make sure to inspect everything on your snowmobile or UTV before heading out to ride. This means belts, fluids, battery and lights. Dress in layers with approved helmets. Carry an emergency kit (tow strap, hand warmers, tools, and first-aid) and have an Emergency Beacon.

Know Your Machine: When riding a snowmobile, watch track condition, braking distance and speed. In an UTV, wear seatbelts, use proper 4WD settings and be cautious of icy rollover areas. Regularly service your ATV, UTV and snowmobile.

Ride Where its Safe and Legal: Always stay on marked trails, no matter where you are riding. Never assume lake ice is safe, as conditions change daily.

Visibility: Keep the machines light on. Use reflective gear or flags. Boji Powersports has proper signage. Slow down in snow dust or whiteouts.

Communication and Group Riding: Share your route with someone. Always ride with a buddy and create set stopping points.

No Alcohol: Impaired winter driving is extremely dangerous.

UTV-Specific Tips: Keep doors and nets latched. Understand cold-weather traction behavior. Know your conditions and have the right equipment for the right terrain.

Snowmobile-Specific Tips: Give Groomers space. Follow the trail speed limits which is 35 mph on state lands (can be lower). Watch for hidden driveways and general rule is to not crowd.

Community Safety: Support grooming clubs. Take proper safety courses. Maintain equipment.
